Job Description:
- 1) Slaughters cattle, calves, and sheep as prescribed by religious law, and examines parts of carcasses to determine whether carcasses meet standards established by specific religion: Sharpens knife on whetstone or sharpening steel and washes knife.
- 2) Cuts throat of animal, using single stroke.
- 3) Inspects carcass and internal organs to verify absence of diseases.
- 4) May inspect and bid for animals at auction.
- 5) May offer ritual prayers while slaughtering animal.
- 6) May inflate lungs with air to determine whether lungs are punctured.
- 7) May mark carcasses of animals that meet religious standards.
- 8) May butcher meat for marketing.
- 9) May be required to hold license issued by religious organization.
- 10) May be designated according to specific religious group as Islamic Butcher; Shactor; Halal Butcher; Kosher Cutter And Searcher; Shochet.
